Germany: Vice Chancellor Gabriel announces new federal refugee regulations
The 16 minister-presidents of the German Federal States gathered in Berlin, Thursday, to debate the new deal for accepting quotas of refugees.
German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel gave a statement to the press after the debate, revealing the compromise between his Social Democratic Party, Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria over the quota of refugees to be accepted by each state. Gabriel declared that the most important factor in the new deal is the reunification of families.
Gabriel also spoke on a deal between Germany and Turkey, which will see the later will close its borders with Jordan and Lebanon, fight human trafficking and install a return policy with Greece affecting refugees who arrived in Greece via the Mediterranean Sea.
Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer, who has previously been a critic of Berlin's immigration policy, said, following the debate, that he and Chancellor Angela Merkel are discussing the refugee quota issue on a "one on one, and we are very solution-oriented."
