Switzerland: WHO expects 3-4 million cases of Zika virus in the Americas

Switzerland, Geneva
January 28, 2016 at 15:29 GMT +00:00 · Published

Director of the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO) Marcos Espinal stated in Geneva, Thursday, that "we can expect some couple of 3 or 4 million cases of Zika virus disease" in the Americas. This, he said, was because the area's human and mosquito populations have no previous exposure to the virus, which means they haven't had a chance to build immunity to the disease.

Speaking at a press briefing on the Zika virus, Espinal went on to say that since the virus is very difficult to detect, "most of the reported cases are not confirmed in the region." However, Espinal spoke of 23 countries to where the infected mosquitoes have spread in the area.

Director-General of the WHO Margaret Chan will meet with an emergency committee on Monday to deal with the outbreak and its potential ties to severe birth defects.

The Zika virus is a disease transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is also responsible for the transmission of chikungunya, dengue and yellow fever. The WHO press briefing is being held after 21 countries and territories in the Americas reported an increase of the local transmission of the Zika virus, since the beginning of 2016.
