UK: Holocaust survivors call on UK Govt. to accept refugees on Holocaust Memorial Day

Dozens of activist participated in the Holocaust Memorial Day Vigil outside Westminster Station in Central London, Monday, while calling on the UK government to accept refugees and comparing refugees today with holocaust survivors escaping Europe over 70 years ago.

The participants, members of the "Never Again Ever" coalition of human rights groups, brought pairs of shoes as well as candles as part of the symbolic memorial action. The participants of the action called on the UK government to accept unaccompanied refugees to the UK. Activists also held banners with messages for the British government, including "Is history repeating itself?" and "Home office your policies are killing people".

In reference to Syrian refugees, holocaust survivor Ruth Barnet said that "I am appalled to hear, people in authority positions talking about processing refugees. You process animals in a meat factory, you do not process human beings," adding that "we have not learnt from the Holocaust."

According to activist Dan Glass, "the infrastructure that enables the holocaust to happen still exists, with the home office being the perpetrator one of the prime examples of racist border policy," adding "and that's exactly the fight we have to do seventy years later."
