Violent clashes erupted in Port-au-Prince, Friday, after the president of Haiti's electoral council, Pierre Louis Opont, announced that Sunday's presidential runoff election had been postponed for the third time.

Opont said that the election had been postponed for security reasons but did not say when the runoff vote would take place. Pro-opposition supporters celebrated Opont's announcement at first. However, the scenes of jubilation rapidly escalated into clashes, with police firing shots at protesters. Demonstrators set car tyres on fire and clashed with police on the street. Several people were injured in the clashes and a number of arrests were made by police.

Haiti has been gripped by violent clashes since opposition candidate Jude Celestin vowed to boycott the runoff election over concerns that the first round of voting had been rigged in favour of the ruling party's candidate Jovenel Moise.

Since the end of Francois Duvalier's rule in 1986, Haiti has had a number of democratic crisis coups and contested elections that have weakened the economic development of an island still recovering after the devastating January 2010 earthquake that killed more 200,000 people.
