Argentina: Protesters block traffic, demand release of activist Milagro Sala
Protesters rallied on the Pueyrredon Bridge in Buenos Aires, Friday, demanding the release of political activist and leader of the Tupac Amaru association Milagro Sala. During the rally protesters blocked traffic, waved flags and chanted slogans condemning Sala's arrest.
The rally gathered participants from a wide range of social organisations, including politicians, members of the Tupac Amaru association, Movimiento Evita, ATE and CTA unions. In total, 26 rallies were staged across Argentina on Friday demanding Sala's release.
Sala is a leader of the Tupac Amaru association, part of the Association of State Workers (ATE) of Jujuy, and a leading figure in the Movimiento Piquetero of Argentina. She was arrested on Saturday 16 after taking part in a protest against reforms to social funding introduced by Jujuy's local government. Many of Sala's supporters argue that her arrest was politically motivated after the Governor of Jujuy Gerardo Morales accused her of "incitement to commit crimes and public disturbance."
