Moldova: Thousands protest new PM outside parliament in Chisinau

Moldova, Republic of, Chisinau
January 21, 2016 at 12:49 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of people rallied around the parliament building in Chisinau on Thursday, in a continuation of recent large-scale protests against the new pro-European Union Prime Minister Pavel Filip and his Cabinet, while police in riot gear remained guarding the entrance. The protesters marched through Chisinau's streets under heavy police presence.

Demonstrators stormed the parliament buidling on Wednesday evening during the swearing in of the new government. Police used batons and smoke grenades to push back the protesters. According to paramedics present during the evening, 15 people were injured.

The incident comes following a day of major protests in the capital where thousands had taken to the streets to demonstrate against Moldovan lawmakers' decision to approve the pro-EU cabinet led by Pavel Filip. The opposition Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova, the Our Party and the Civil Platform DA (Dignity and Justice) are among the organisations calling for the massive protests that are rocking the capital of the small ex-Soviet state.

Moldova's previous government, led by Liberal Democrat leader Valeriu Strelet, stepped down on October 29. If a new government is not approved by January 29, parliament will be dissolved and an early election will be called.
