Austria: Revised refugee quota cap submitted, confirms Chancellor Faymann

Austria, Vienna

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann held a press conference at the Federal Chancellery of Austria in Vienna, Wednesday, during which he revealed Austrian government's intentions of further handling the refugee crisis by introducing an influx cap.

Faymann spoke of the Austrian government establishing a “benchmark number” of refugees Austria is willing to accept and integrate. Faymann said Austria will accept "1.5% of the Austrian population, around 130,000 people in the next years, whom we are ready to take in, and to integrate."

Faymann went on to say that Austria needs to "increase our border control massively, to make clear to the uncooperative people at our borders, who are not applying for asylum, who just want to get through to other countries that do not take in any more refugees. Explaining this to them would work much more effectively, if it is done at the EU external borders."

Austrian Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner added "There is a development with the refugee issue, which needs to be labelled as dynamically dramatic. The big number of refugees is overwhelming our system, and is overwhelming all practical and technical possibilities, especially if you look at the dimension - as shown last year - to provide accommodation, in this year, in the next year, and so on."

Austria is a key transit point on the refugees' route towards other Western European countries.
