USA: BLM activists 'reclaim MLK Day' by shutting down Oakland

United States, Oakland
January 19, 2016 at 08:39 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds of Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists marched from Oakland to Emeryville, Monday, rallying outside several shopping centres and blocking a section of the Bay Bridge as part of a nationwide effort to "reclaim Martin Luther King Jr. Day."

During the rally, protesters marched to the Home Depot store where 38-year-old black woman Yvette Henderson was shot and killed by police in 2015. Twenty-five protesters were arrested after chaining themselves together on the Bay Bridge, blocking all traffic on the westbound lanes for 30 minutes. The protest ended with a rally outside the Bay Street shopping complex.

During the rally activist Cat Brooks said: "They managed to sanitise his (MLK) image. All we hear about is the 'I have a dream' speech, the 'love your brother' speech, but they don't want to talk about the King that was connecting the dots between race and class."

The Oakland protest was part of nationwide effort by BLM activists to "reclaim MLK Day." The movement to reclaim MLK Day started in 2015 after BLM activists raised concerns that the national holiday had been commercialised, with people forgetting the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as a civil rights activist and dissident who fought the status quo.
