Germany: Bavarian district governor sends busload of refugees 'to Merkel'

Germany, Berlin
January 14, 2016 at 21:52 GMT +00:00 · Published

The governor of the small Bavarian town of Landshut, Peter Dreier, sent a bus with around 30 refugees on board to the chancellery in Berlin, Thursday. The move follows a comment made by Dreier in October, when he said he would send refugees back in the case of their numbers surpassing the agreed quota.

While addressing the press outside the German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office in Berlin, Dreier stated that such a situation when refugees live in emergency halls is no longer acceptable. "Refugees cannot live in emergency halls for months without private sphere and possibility to move around," he said. Dreier continued, stressing that Germany is not able to receive another million refugees for a second year in a row. "If we managed to limit the number of refugees to an amount which was put forward by Minister-President Seehofer for instance, I would say 'Yes, we can handle that amount, even annually’," he explained. "This would mean 360 refugees for the region of Landshut with the total number of 200,000," Dreier added.

According to Dreier, all the refugees were informed before the trip why they were on the bus and all had agreed to participate in the action. The refugees will be accommodated in one of the reception centres in Berlin.
