Germany: Death toll of Germans killed in Istanbul attack rises to ten
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced that the number of German citizens killed in Tuesday's suicide blast in Istanbul has risen to ten, speaking during a conference with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry in Berlin on Wednesday.
After a bilateral meeting on the current situation in the Middle East, Steinmeier said that "unfortunately we have received sorrowful news that ten German citizens have been killed yesterday as the result of the terrorist attack in Istanbul's old city." Steinmeier continued saying that "there is no evidence that the German group was attacked intentionally."
Moreover, Steinmeier stressed that Germany should support Egypt in the fight against terrorism. "We know that Egypt faces a real terrorist threat. And we have to totally support Egypt in this fight," he said. He also noted that "it is impossible to counter this form of extremism only by military measures."
According to Steinmeier, unless Germany authorities receive "more information about the attack, particularly about the background of the person who has committed the crime", there are "no reasons to refrain from trips to Turkey or Istanbul."
