Germany: PEGIDA and AntiFa supporters clash in Munich
Several arrests were made after clashes erupted between PEGIDA-supporters and anti-PEGIDA counter-protesters in the Bavarian city of Munich, Monday, on the one-year anniversary rally of the Munich branch of PEGIDA.
Hundreds of pro-refugee and left-wing activists as well as many refugees surrounded the PEGIDA rally in the counter-protest. Hundreds of police officers were deployed and built barricades to keep the two groups apart.
Speeches against German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter were held at the rally. PEGIDA-supporters scuffled with anti-PEGIDA protesters and journalists and police was seen hurrying to the scene of the scuffles. The march was redirected several times to avoid further incidents.
Germany has witnessed a wave of Islamophobic and anti-refugee violence in the past year especially embodied in the rise of groups starting with PEGIDA (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West), at the same time as becoming the main destination for refugees fleeing conflict zones in Syria.
