Syria: Humanitarian aid reaches besieged town of Madaya

Syrian Arab Republic, Madaya
January 11, 2016 at 18:04 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thirty two trucks loaded with humanitarian aid started to arrive at the besieged town of Madaya near Damascus, on Monday evening, after a 12 hour delay caused by militants controlling the area.

Initially, the humanitarian convoys were scheduled to start entering the city on Sunday, but were postponed a day due to an earlier agreement between militias and the Syrian government. Madaya has been under the control of the so-called Free Syrian Army since July last year.

Doctors Without Borders reported recently that there were a number of deaths from starvation documented in the town. According to the organisation, around 23 civilians have died through lack of food, six of whom were infants (under one year old) and five were over 60 years old. Another 13 people killed by snipers while trying to escape the town.

According to the UN, some 4.5 million people in Syria live in areas that are difficult for humanitarian aid to access. Of these Syrians, around 400,000 of them live in the besieged areas.
