USA: Oregon militia members pay surprise visit to FBI

United States, Burns
January 10, 2016 at 04:14 GMT +00:00 · Published

A convoy of around 20 vehicles with a heavily armed security detail paid a surprise visit to the FBI Saturday, with members of the self-proclaimed Pacific Patriot Network speaking with government officials at the temporary FBI Forward Base set up at Harney County Airport in Burns, Oregon on Saturday.

Members of the Pacific Patriot Network journeyed from the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, currently under militia occupation, to the temporary FBI base to deliver documents in what they said was an attempt to start a dialogue between FBI tactical teams and the militias occupying the refuge. The leader of the '3 percent of Idaho' group Brandon Curtiss said that he thought the encounter was a success.

The armed protest group, referring to themselves as 'Citizens for Constitutional Freedom,' seized the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, located around 50 miles (80 km) from Burns last Saturday, after two of its members were scheduled to go to prison for setting fire to federal government land.

The siege began after some 300 people marched through Burns last Saturday, protesting the prosecution of county ranchers Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond. Cliven Bundy's three sons, Ammon, Ryan, and Mel are among the militia who took the protest further and went on to occupy the refuge, which was empty at the time.
