Italy: Thousands take to Sicilian streets against oil-drilling in Mediterranean
Around 1,000 people gathered in the city of Licata on the south coast of Sicily, Saturday, to rally against oil drilling in the Mediterranean Sea.
The protesters marched through the city holding banners reading "No oil, neither in the sea nor on the land," while chanting anti-drilling slogans. The protest passed peacefully, with no reports of altercations.
Several environmental organisations and local communities claim that oil drilling on Sicily's south-west coast is threatening one of the planet's "marine biodiversity hotspots" as well as the island’s famed beaches.
