Bahrain: Clashes continue after Saudi execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr
Violent clashes continued between protesters and riot police on the Bahraini island of Sitra, Friday, following the execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia.
Protesters used fireworks and Molotov cocktails to attack the security forces, while the police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd. Sheikh al-Nimr's execution sparked uproar in the Middle East, with protesters storming several Saudi consulates in the region.
Sheikh al-Nimr was among 47 people executed on 2 January at the hands of the Saudi government after being convicted for "terrorism" offenses. He was a vocal critic of Saudi Arabia, and was one of seven people accused of orchestrating anti-government protests that erupted in Saudi Arabia's eastern province in 2011.
