Belgium: EC officials speak out on Schengen crisis after emergency meeting

European Commission officials held a joint presser following emergency talks regarding Europe's Schengen passport-free zone in Brussels, Wednesday.

Swedish Migration Minister Morgan Johansson and his Danish counterpart Inger Stojberg were joined by German Interior Ministry official Ole Schroeder and European Commissioner in charge of Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos for the update on talks regarding border controls.

Avramopoulos called for the talks after Sweden imposed controls, including identity checks, on travellers arriving from Denmark on Monday in an attempt to reduce the flow of refugees and migrants into the country. He said that the European Commission agreed to keep to minimum exceptional measures and return to normal as soon as possible.

Following Sweden's decision to introduce stricter passport checks at its frontiers, Denmark subsequently introduced spot checks on its border with Germany. Stojberg said that Denmark does "not wish to be the final destination for thousands and thousands of asylum seekers."

Swedish Minister of Justice, Johansson stated that "the situation in Sweden this autumn became very difficult" and added that 26,000 unaccompanied children and minors arrived to the country. German State secretary expressed his concerns about the situation on the borders during the summer time "when all the Germans would like to enter these vacation houses in Denmark." In his opinion, Commission "must look very carefully how this situation is."

Six Schengen countries including Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and Norway have now re-implemented border checks in an attempt to regulate the flow of refugees and migrants into Europe.

The Schengen Area currently consists of 26 European countries and covers a population of over 400 million people.
