Russia: Patriarch Kirill calls for peace in Christmas address

Christmas helps us to feel and realise our affinity with God who became a man, and through this understanding to feel that there is no more loneliness, no void in life, because God fills every moment with his presence. In the time when the Saviour came to earth, it was neither peaceful nor easy, but it has brought people peace that cannot be achieved by human efforts, no matter how significant the efforts are. This is peace with God, peace with conscience, peace with others. The heart of the Christian cannot but ache when he sees hostility and enmity between brothers, aggression and hatred. The Christian, like no one else, should be able to overcome estrangement between people and his own estrangement from his fellows. And the best means for this are cooperation, a joint good deed, no matter if it is grandiose or the most simple and humble one.

Today we experience hard times, but we have someone to ask for help and intercession. Let the new-born baby Jesus bring his peace and blessing to Earth and let his grace fill our family, home, and the entire city. Happy holiday, my dear ones, Happy Christmas!"

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus', sent his Christmas message out to all Orthodox Christians from Moscow, Wednesday evening, speaking to his followers on Christmas Eve in the Orthodox calendar.

“Christmas helps us to feel and realise our closeness to God," said Patriarch Kirill, adding that this closeness helps us “to feel that there is no more loneliness, no void in life, for God Himself fills every moment with his presence.” He encouraged people to deal with hate, aggression, and hostility through cooperation, no matter how big or small the task.

The Patriarch said that God, through Jesus, had brought peace to Earth; a peace that cannot be achieved by human effort, no matter how significant that effort is. He concluded by saying it was vital to reduce estrangement between people.

Hundreds of people gathered near the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour on Wednesday evening to celebrate Orthodox Christmas. Russian President Vladimir Putin attended a midnight mass in the church of the Intercession of the Mother of God in the village of Turginovo in Tverskaya oblast, Wednesday, as Russia celebrates Orthodox Christmas. Following the Julian calendar, Russian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas 13 days later than those who use the Gregorian calendar.
