Italy: Controls banning burqas from hospitals reaffirmed in Lombardy
Several signs were posted around public and state buildings in Italy's northern region of Lombardy, Tuesday, informing people that those covering their faces, especially with the Muslim burqa, would not be allowed access to the premises.
According to an old regional law recently reaffirmed by the right-wing Lega Nord, civilians wearing balaclavas, burqas, niqabs, or helmets would not be permitted to enter hospitals or other regional buildings for alleged security reasons.
The signs read "For safety reasons it is forbidden to enter with faces covered," and have been translated into Italian, French, English and Arabic in order to warn foreign guests visiting the northern region. The placards also now bear an additional picture of a burqa.
The measure is allegedly a way "to take care of peoples’ security after the Paris attacks," according La Liga representative Jari Colla. The law is part of an amended piece of legislation from 1975 which was never fully set into action, but has been adapted to target those wearing the veil.
