Sweden/Denmark: Toughest border controls since 1950s put in place between nations

Sweden, Oresund Bridge/Copenhagen
January 4, 2016 at 21:38 GMT +00:00 · Published

Denmark and Sweden re-introduce border controls for the first time since the 1950s, Monday, on the same day Copenhagen stepped up controls at its border with Germany. Footage shows people having their identification documents checked in Copenhagen and on the Swedish side of the Oresund Bridge.

Passengers who were travelling from Denmark to Sweden via the Oresund bridge or by train had to present a valid document such as a passport or valid photo ID with those who did not carry a valid document denied entry. Danish police officers carried out intensive controls at the train station of the terminal 1 at the Copenhagen airport. Swedish authorities checked the cars travelling to Sweden from Denmark by crossing the Oresund Bridge.

It has been estimated that the new measures will increase the 40-minute journey from Copenhagen to Malmo by 30 minutes for the 20,000 commuters on a daily basis as direct journeys will no longer be available.

Danish authorities have announced that the border controls to the borders with Germany are supposed to last for the next ten days with the government keeping the right to extend the measure. Sweden has received more than 163,000 asylum applications in 2015.
