Cuba: Santeria prophecies foresee migration crisis and global unrest for 2016

Afro-Cuban Santeria priests gathered in Havana, Saturday, to envisage their New Year prophecy to a crowd of followers. The Santeria priests known as Babalawos, influenced from the West African Yoruba traditions, presented the annual 'letter of the year,' which forecasted an explosive upsurge in migration and an increase in global social unrest in 2016.

Hundreds of followers of the Santeria religion congregated in central Havana eagerly awaiting to receive guidance from the Santeria religion's annual forecast. The Santeria 'letter of the year' predicted that economic hardship and political conflict would spark worldwide mass migration with the Babalawo priests recommending the establishment of favourable accords with respect to migration policy as well as reaching a balance between salaries and the high cost of basic necessities.

Babalawo is a Yoruba word that literally means "father of the mysteries" according to the Yoruba tradition and religion. They represent a spiritual guide or 'priest' and can determine the future by communicating with the divine.

Santeria, which has its roots in West African Yoruba traditions, brought to Cuba and the Caribbean by African slaves, is practiced by millions of Cubans and has several local variants throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
