USA: Protesters march against grand jury decision in Tamir Rice killing case
Demonstrators calling for justice with regard to murdered 12-year-old Tamir Rice took to the streets of Cleveland on Tuesday. The demo centred on the recent grand jury decision not to prosecute the two police officers behind the shooting of the youth last year.
Activists and protesters blocked traffic and rallied through downtown Cleveland holding banners and calling for ‘justice.' In response to the grand jury’s decision, an activist said "No I wasn’t shocked, we were all hopeful. Every time these murders and executions happen, we want the system to work as it should to obtain justice. We are continuously hoping that it does work and that justice is obtained but so far it hasn’t been.”
Large deployments of police were present keeping a watchful eye on protesters as they rallied into the night. The demo remained peaceful with no reports of any incidents.
Rice was shot dead by police officer Timothy Loehmann on November 22, 2014 in Cleveland Ohio, after Loehmann and his partner Frank Garmback received a police dispatch about a male African-American juvenile who was pointing a gun - the caller admitted that it might be a toy gun - at random people at a Cleveland city park (Cudell Recreation Centre). When the officers arrived, Loehmann shot the victim, however the gun turned out to be a harmless toy gun.
