Japan: Tunnels built to prevent turtles being crushed by trains
The West Japan Railway Company in conjunction with Suma Aqualife Park from Kobe launched a project that involves constructing and placing U-shaped tunnels underneath railroad tracks, which will ensure a safe passage of large numbers of turtles crossing the tracks on a day-to-day basis.
This project comes after an increase in frequency of train-traffic disruptions due to turtles being stuck between track switches. The U-shaped lanes lying underneath the existing tracks are intended to prevent potential train accidents and also protect the turtles from getting stuck or crushed by incoming trains.
According to reports, between 2002 and 2014 there were at least a dozen turtle-caused train disruptions in the Kyoto and Nara area.
