Ukraine: Miners march on Energy and Coal Mining Ministry to call for state support

At least 200 miners from the Donetsk region marched from the Verkhovna Rada to the Ministry of Energy and Coal Mining, in Kiev, Wednesday, asking for further funding of the national coal industry and advanced state support.

Earlier in the day the miners gathered outside the Verkhovna Rada carrying flags of the trade union of the coal industry of Ukraine calling on the government to pay the ₴650 million UAH debt (€25,8m, $28.2m). During the rally the 200 protesters passed by the Cabinet of Ministers building while heading to the ministry of Energy and Coal Mining through Khreschatyk street where they knocked their helmets on the ground while chanting slogans.

The Chairman of the Trade Union of Coal Industry of Ukraine, Turmanov Viktor Ivanovich speaking to the protesters outside Verkhovna Rada at the beginning of the march said that "in the next year the situation will be catastrophic in the coal industry. For all the years of independence no one government hasn't act such way with the industry, with miners as this government. You cannot leave now without miners without money."

The rally has so far been peaceful with no incidents erupting between the miners and the police forces at the scene.
