Turkey: PKK fighters clash with Turkish forces in Sur district of Diyarbakir
Fighting between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Turkish security forces intensified as street to street fighting took place in the Sur district of Diyarbakir, Tuesday. The clashes come as PKK fighters retaliate against the Turkish military, who have had the district under siege for the last three weeks.
Fighting between Turkish security forces and PKK fighters, which resumed following the collapse of a two-year ceasefire in July, has intensified in recent months leading the Turkish government to impose multiple curfews over the south-east of Turkey.
An estimated 171 Turkish security forces personnel, 195 militants and 157 civilians were killed between 1 January and 5 December, 2015, according to statistics published by the Human Rights Association (IHD) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV).
