Syria: Moskva, flagship of Black Sea Fleet, guards Russian jets over Latakia
The Black Sea Fleet's flagship, Moskva, provided cover to the Russian Air Force's operations in Syria, Thursday, near the shore of Latakia.
Russia's Moskva cruiser is an 11,500-tonne and 186-metre warship, equipped with S-300 long-range air defence system. It is the class leader of the Slava class warships. Running up to 32.5 knots (30 knot sustained) at its maximum speed, the Moskva can operate with a range of 8,070 nautical miles at 18 knots or 2,200 nautical miles at 32 knots. It also comes equipped with 16 P-500 Bazalt Surface to Surface Missile (SSM) canisters with 4K80 missiles. Featuring eight cylinders, each carries eight Fort (SA-N-6) Surface to Air (SAM) missiles.
The air defence for Russian Air Forces was strengthened after the incident with Sukhoi Su-24 which was downed by Turkish aircraft F-16 near the border with Turkey in Syria on November 24.
