Greece: Trade unionists protest in Athens as new bailout reforms approved
Supporters of the All Workers Military Front (PAME) trade union group rallied in Athens, Tuesday, as the Greek parliament voted in favour of a new round of economic reforms.
The protest commenced at 18:00 local time (16:00 GMT), with protesters marching from Omonia Square in the centre of Athens towards the Greek parliament on Syntagma Square.
In total 153 Greek MPs backed the new reforms, while 138 opposed and nine abstained. The new measures will affect wages in the public sector and will lead to overhauls of the banking system. Once implemented the Greek government will receive €1 billion ($1.1 billion) from its lenders.
PAME are a trade union movement founded by the Greek Communist Party (KKE) in April 1999, and boast a membership of 850,000 including card holders at affiliated organisations.
