Turkey: Police fire tear gas, water cannon at Kurdish protesters in Diyarbakir
Turkish riot police fired tear gas and water cannon at Kurdish protesters during a rally in Diyarbakir, Tuesday. The protesters took to the streets to denounce the curfew reimposed by Turkish authorities across several neighbourhoods of the Sur district.
Fighting between Turkish security forces and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has inflamed in recent months with multiple curfews being put in place all over the south-east of Turkey in what authorities have said is an attempt to prevent civilian casualties.
An estimated 171 Turkish security forces personnel, 195 militants, and 157 civilians were killed between January 1 and December 5 2015, according to statistics published by the Human Rights Association (İHD) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV).
