Yemen: Fighting in Taiz rages on despite ceasefire talks

Yemen, Taiz
December 15, 2015 at 13:31 GMT +00:00 · Published

Despite both pro-Houthi forces and Hadi-loyalists reaching a ceasefire agreement yesterday, clashes continued to dog the Yemeni city of Taiz, Tuesday. There has been reports that fighting continues in the city of Marib, with indications that Dhamar and Hodeida provinces are still being hit by Saudi-led airstrikes.

Spokesperson for the pro-Houthi Ansarullah party Mohammed Abdulsalam confirmed that an agreement has been reached on a ceasefire to start on December 14, during a press conference in Sanaa, Saturday. The statement came as planned peace talks in Switzerland are set to take place next week, to which the United Nations has invited Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's government and the Houthi representatives, after both sides agreed on a draft agenda and ground rules for the talks.

According to UN figures, the ongoing conflict in Yemen has claimed the lives of more than 5,700 people, with the Saudi-led coalition conducting airstrikes and fighting on the ground in order to restore the ousted government of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
