Russia: Putin welcomes Lukashenko for 'essential' bilateral talks

SOT, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko (in Russian): "Vladimir Vladimirovich, first of all, thank you for your hospitality. Secondly, we agreed in Ufa, during the so-called interim meeting, that before this visit we would work with our governments, and on different levels, on issues which should be addressed. Those problems which were left for us to solve will be discussed and settled during the meeting here, in the Kremlin. We know well what Russia wants from Belarus. I am sure that Russia knows what Belarus needs from Russia. I think that a settlement of the existing problems will bring our peoples together; however we can’t evaluate our relations in a classic manner because our relations are so close that those criteria don’t apply. I am grateful for the assessment you gave and we are ready to briefly and clearly – I know that our governments have been working on these issues - discuss and solve the problems which we face today."

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed his Belarusian counterpart Aleksandr Lukashenko to Moscow for what is expected to be a major bilateral summit on Tuesday.

The Russian president described the visit as “essential” for determining the quality and depth of ties between Moscow and Minsk. He remarked that the visit could help establish “the level of political relations and the volume of economic cooperation" between the two nations. The result could be the start of processes “aimed at the unification of our possibilities for solving social issues in Belarus and Russia."

President Lukashenko meanwhile said a lot of work had been carried out in advance and “problems which were left for us to solve will be discussed and settled during the meeting here." He said he aims “to briefly and clearly … discuss and solve the problems which we face today” so that “a settlement of existing problems will bring our peoples together.” Regarding ties between Minsk and Moscow he said “we can’t evaluate our relations in a classic manner because our relations are so close that those criteria don’t apply."

Discussions are expected to focus on the deepening of cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union as well as on ways of enhancing mutual trade and investment.
