Brazil: Thousands march against proposed education reforms
Thousands marched through central Sao Paulo on Wednesday in protest against the latest round of education reforms proposed by the city's governor, Geraldo Alckmin.
Under Alkmin's proposals, 94 public schools are to be closed and merged in order to save money and generate revenues through the sell-off of empty schools. Students and teachers oppose the plans, which they say will only worsen the existing problem of overcrowding in public schools.
Following the latest protests the reforms have now been suspended by judicial decision.
