France: Aurora the polar bear roars for indigenous peoples against climate change

Aurora, the giant Greenpeace polar bear, appeared outside the COP21 venue in Le Bourget, northeastern Paris on Wednesday to "roar" to demand climate action and for indigenous rights to be included in the agenda. Indigenous rights were not included in the first draft presented at COP21.

Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace Executive Director, explained the importance of indigenous people in the fight against climate change and explained the need for granting access to renewable energy for everyone.

Representatives at the event included the Mundurukus people, who live along the Tapajos River in the Amazon basin; the Itelmen people from Kamchatka in Russia; the Nivkh people on Sakhalin Island; and the Yukaghir people from the Russian Far East.

Aurora the bear's last appearance in public was on September 2, when Oscar-winner Emma Thompson helped move her through London and place her outside the Shell Headuarters, to protest against the company's drilling in the Arctic. The bear stayed outside the building for a month, until the oil giant announced it was withdrawing from the Arctic.
