Belarus: Trilateral Contact Group resume Ukraine talks in Minsk

Belarus, Minsk
December 8, 2015 at 23:48 GMT -00:00 · Published

Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office in Ukraine Martin Sajdik spoke to press after the Trilateral Contact Group resumed Ukraine talks in Minsk, Tuesday.

According to Sajdik, the Contact Group agreed on areas along the line of contact which should be primarily cleared of mines. "Five areas in the zone of contact have been agreed, two of them require additional check," he said, adding that "the goal is to extend the list of these objects up to 12 until December 22." Moreover, OSCE official stressed the necessity to achieve progress in "releasing illegally detained persons and searching of missing persons" before the New Year.

While speaking on the results of today's meeting, DPR Head Denis Pushilin said that Ukrainian forces "captured seven villages" which were in so-called 'grey zone.' "Status quo has been violated and such actions can cause the start of armed hostilities," he continued.

In November, militias of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk Peoples' Republic (DPR/LPR) began to withdraw weapons from the lines of engagement in accordance with new ceasefire regulations. The withdrawal comes as Ukrainian government forces and Donbass militia troops both agreed to move heavy and light weaponry to a further 15km (9.3mi) back from the front-line. The agreement was reached after the leaders of Ukraine, France, Russia, and Germany met in Paris to try to pave the way to a permanent peace deal in eastern Ukraine.
