USA: FBI investigating San Bernardino shootings as possible ‘terrorist attack’ – White House

United States, Washington D.C.

"The FBI is leading this investigation as the President said yesterday, because of the possibility that this is a terrorist attack" said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest at a press briefing in Washington, Friday. The statement comes after 14 people were killed in America's latest mass shooting incident on Wednesday in San Bernardino.

"The President summoned his National Security Adviser, his top Counter Terrorism adviser, his Attorney General, the director of the FBI and the deputy director of Homeland Security to the Oval office yesterday to get an update on what exactly transpired" said Earnest.

He also went on to say that "the United States and the West are not at war with Islam. We are at war with extremist's, who are capitalising on some vulnerable populations including many Muslims, trying to inspire them to carry out acts of violence."

Authorities confirmed that 14 people were killed during the incident and 21 left injured. Two shooters fired automatic weapons on a party taking place at the Inland Regional Centre in San Bernardino. The centre is a non-profit dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities.

The two armed assailants have been identified as 28-year-old Syed Farook and 27-year-old Tashfeen Malik. Farook is confirmed to be a US citizen and had been working for the county's Public Health Department for five years before the shooting. Both suspects were killed by police in a shoot-out on Wednesday evening.
