Serbia: Vienna talks the only way to solve Syrian conflict and defeat IS - Mogherini
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini was among foreign ministers and delegates from the member states of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) gathered at the Kombank Arena in Belgrade, Thursday, for the opening session of the 22nd OSCE Ministerial Council.
Mogherini stated that "the overhwhelming feeling is that Europe is less secure than it used to be," adding that "the attacks in Paris, Ankara and Istanbul, Tunis, Beirut, Bamako and on a Saint Petersburg-bound airliner over Egypt, just to mention the most recent ones, are sad and clear reminders of this."
Mogherini also spoke on the need to unite and put aside divisions, stating that "the defeat of Daesh [IS] can only be achieved if we put an end to the Syrian civil war and peace in Syria can only be achieved through a national, regional and international reconciliation. The process we started in Vienna is the only way forward."
The EU High Representative continued "the world would not understand and would not excuse us if we fail in this because of short-sighted divisions," adding that we need to "put an end to the civil war in Syria and unite forces against Daesh [IS]."
Mogherini also praised the Iranian nuclear deal as "milestone in multilateral diplomacy," emphasising again the need to "acknowledge that the terrorist threat can only be defeated in partnership."
The OSCE Ministerial Council (originally, Council of Ministers for Foreign Affairs) has convened annually since 1973 and is the central governing body of the OSCE. Hosted by Serbian Foreign Minister Ivaca Dacic, the 2015 OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, the meeting will bring together 1,500 officials and the foreign ministers of 57 OSCE member states and 11 partner countries, giving them the opportunity to discuss and assess the organisation's operations over the past year. The conference will last until Friday.
