UK: Govt. votes for airstrikes in Syria as London protesters decry mobilisation

Many of some 1,500 anti-war protesters wept as they gathered outside the Palace of Westminster in London, Wednesday, after UK parliament voted to 397 to 223 in favour of launching airstrikes against the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISISL) in Syria.

Some 67 Labour MPs voted in favour of the strikes, despite leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn calling for his party to vote against the motion. Winning a majority of 174, the pro-intervention Labour backlash swung the decision for the Tory-backed plan. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has stated the airstrikes could begin “very quickly,” with raids expected to begin as soon as tomorrow morning.

The campaign group Stop the War Coalition organised the large protest outside of the palace, blocking the roads surrounding Parliament.

Following the recent Paris attacks, growing concern over potential militant attacks within the EU, and the spread of so-called extremism from Middle Eastern conflicts, the UK is among other European states to have called to increase their defence budgets. British Prime Minister David Cameron released plans earlier in November to increase the UK's military budget by £12 billion ($18.1 billion, €17 billion) as part of a ten year expansion programme, expected to cost £178 billion ($270 billion, €25.4 billion). British authorities are also set to hire some 2,000 new recruits for the services of the MI5, MI6 and GCHQ, with Cameron justifying the security boost to help with the "fight against terrorism."
