Nicaragua: Momotombo stratovolcano spouts ash and lava
The Motomombo stratovolcano began spouting ash and lava, Wednesday, after a series of eruptions began the day before. It is the volcano's first eruption in 110 years and it sent plumes of steam and ash up to 1 km (3,281 feet) into the air.
Groups of local residents watched and took photos of the eruption of the 4,255-foot-high (1,297-metre) volcano from a distance. Schools in the region were closed after light ash fell from the skies in communities close to the volcano.
Residents of the nearby city of Leon were forced to relocate their municipality in 1610 after Momotombo erupted.
