
Bulgaria: Mass held for airmen who died in Su-24 downing recovery op
Dozens attended an Orthodox memorial service that included Mass being observed, near Sliven on Wednesday to pay tribute to the Russian servicemen who died in the Su-24 downing and resultant recovery operation in Syria.
Attended mostly by Russians living in the area, the mass was organised by Father Evgeni Yanakiev and was held on a hill called Hammam Bair, where a memorial reminds of the fallen Russian soldiers of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) is located.
Oleg Peshkov was killed when a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 jet was downed by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet for allegedly entering Turkish airspace in Syria last week. Alexander Pozynich, was subsequently killed during an attempted rescue mission to locate the second pilot after the helicopter he was flying in came under fire and was forced to crash land.
