UK: Met officers open fire on mock-terrorists in central London exercise

United Kingdom, London
December 2, 2015 at 07:22 GMT +00:00 · Published

Roughly 2,000 police officers participated in a mock-up terrorist attack in central London on Tuesday, as the UK continues to improve the response of its security forces as well as expanding its capacity in the wake of the Paris attacks.

During the exercise, held in an unused office block in central London, four explosive-rigged and fully armed 'militants' entered a the building, 'killing' several people while taking several hostages. The armed police forces responded by storming the building and overpowering the faux-assailants.

The drills were part of a several months programme which will seek to test armed responses to various security situations. Authorities of the Metropolitan Police Service claim that the exercises were set up long before the Paris attacks and had been planned in the annual training schedule. Similar role-plays will continue to be enforced to ensure the utmost preparedness in all of the emergency services, according to officials.

Following the recent Paris attacks and growing concern over potential militant attacks within the EU, the UK is among other European states to have placed their security forces on high alert. Several governments have also released plans to increase law enforcement and intelligence service numbers, alongside their defence budgets. British Prime Minister David Cameron released plans on November 23rd to increase the UK’s military budget by £12 billion ($18.1 billion, €17 billion) as part of a ten year expansion programme, expected to cost £178 billion ($270 billion, €25.4 billion). British authorities are also set to hire some 2,000 new recruits for the services of the MI5, MI6 and GCHQ, despite increasing public concern over cuts to the public sector.
