Argentina: 'March of the prostitutes' - Activists call for legalisation of abortion
Hundreds of feminist activists gathered at Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Saturday, to demand the full legalisation of abortion. The protesters, gathered under the title of 'March of the prostitutes,' reenacted female casualties from clandestine abortions in order to raise awareness about sexual violence and to advocate for access to safe and legal abortions.
Currently, abortion is permitted in Argentina only when the life or the health of the mother is in danger and in the case of rape. Due to these restrictions, an estimated 500,000 illegal abortions take place each year, amounting to almost 40 percent of total pregnancies throughout the country.
Earlier in November, thousands of activists marched through the streets of Buenos Aires to show their opposition to violence against women. Protesters dressed up as victims of gender violence, with some posing being hanged and others as victims of sexual violence and rape.
