Italy: Activists rally in solidarity with killed Russian Su-24 pilot
Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Russian embassy in Rome, Saturday, to rally in solidarity with the Russian pilot who was killed in the downing of the Su-24 warplane by Turkey and the Russia soldier who died attempted to rescue him and his co-pilot. They also rallied to show their support for the Russian intervention in Syria.
Demonstrators waved Russian and Italian flags, and the colours of the St. George's ribbon, and chanted their support for Syrian President Bashar-al Assad. At the end of the rally, activists signed a letter of solidarity which was delivered to Russia's ambassador to Italy.
The action comes four days after a Sukhoi Su-24 jet was downed by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet for allegedly entering Turkish airspace. One pilot, Oleg Peshkov, was killed in the incident and a marine, Alexander Pozynich, was subsequently killed during an attempted rescue mission to locate the second pilot after the helicopter he was flying in came under fire and was forced to crash land.
