Russia: EMERCOM generators bring vital power for Crimean children's medical devices
Two generators providing a vital source of electricity for children in need of ongoing medical treatment were delivered to families in the Crimean city of Sevastopol by Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) workers, Saturday. The region has been deprived of a constant source of electricity after power lines to the peninsula were cut in Ukraine on November 22.
Eleven-year-old Ivan Plotnikov, who suffers from Werdnig-Hoffmann spinal muscular atrophy, requires constant use of an artificial pulmonary ventilation device. Ivan's mother, Olga, said that after the blackouts began to last for longer periods, she "really started to worry."
Earlier, a special EMERCOM IL-76 flight arrived on the Crimean Peninsula in order to provide citizens with generators for autonomous power supply, as well as other vital equipment.
Electricity was cut to large parts of the peninsula when power lines were severed in multiple blasts in the Ukrainian Kherson Region on Sunday. The region is still experiencing rolling blackouts, with a state of emergency having been declared and local officials ordering homes and businesses to conserve power. Electricity for important public facilities is currently being supplied via generators. EMERCOM on Friday set up a special emergency point in the Crimean city of Alupka, to provide citizens with a warm shelter and food as temperatures continue to plummet.
