Russia: Downing of Russian jet looks like a 'planned provocation' - Lavrov

The downing of a Russian warplane in Syria by Turkey appears to be a pre-planned provocation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Moscow, Wednesday. Lavrov made the comments after talking to Mevlut Chavushoglu, the newly appointed Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Lavrov complained that "we have serious doubts that it was not a deliberate act, it is very similar to a planned provocation." He accused "the reports that you and your colleagues [in the media] are doing and showing include videos that were prepared in advance." The diplomat argued that this "as well as other evidence proves that it was all planned."

The Foreign Minister claimed his Turkish counterpart "could not give me an answer," as to if "the Turks coordinated their actions against Russian aircraft with the Americans." Furthermore, he asked why Turkey would like to have a buffer zone in the area, suggesting that "there is a desire to protect this infrastructure and to prevent its destruction." According to Lavrov "on this question I did not get an answer either."

Directly after Tuesday’s downing of the Russian warplane, Lavrov cancelled a trip to Turkey and warned Russians not to travel to the country either. One pilot died and the second was rescued in the early hours of Wednesday morning after ejecting from the Su-24 which had been hit by Turkish F-16s.
