Belgium: Schools and metro reopen despite ongoing terror alert

Belgium, Brussels
November 25, 2015 at 22:24 GMT +00:00 · Published

Police officers were stationed at every school and metro station in Brussels, as residents in Belgium's capital began to return to normal, Wednesday. The terror alert in Brussels remains at its highest level, meaning that the authorities still fear 'serious and imminent threats.'

Apart from the schools, most of the shops in central Brussels and half its 69 metro stations opened once again. Despite this, an estimated 1,000 police officers and soldiers remain stationed in the Belgium capital.

On Sunday 16 people were arrested, in 19 separate house raids in the Brussels region. The raids were conducted as police continue their search for Salah Abdelsalam, one of the key suspects in the Paris attacks on November 13.

The terror alert, which was introduced on Saturday, comes after the attacks in Paris, which left 130 people dead and just over 349 injured. A number of the attackers are thought to be Belgian citizens; the country with the highest per capita rate of people joining the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Europe.
