Turkey: We will take 'any necessary precautions' to defend our nation - Davutoglu

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that Turkey is ready to "take any necessary precautions" to defend the nation, speaking from Ankara, Tuesday, after Turkish aircraft shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 jet in Syrian along the Turkish border. "The whole world should be aware of that, we are to defend and take any necessary precautions to protect and secure our nation and democracy," Davutoglu stated.

US President Barack Obama earlier called for dialogue between Moscow and Ankara, while French President Francois Hollande emphasised the importance of ensuring the fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) carried on.

One of the Russian Sukhoi Su-24 fighter jets involved in Syrian operations was downed near Latakia, close to the Syrian border with Turkey, Tuesday. Turkey claims that its F-16 fighter jets shot down the plane for an alleged violation of their airspace after purportedly warning the pilots 10 times. However, Russia has denied the claim that it violated Turkish airspace.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has cancelled Wednesday's scheduled trip to Turkey for the Russian-Turkey Joint Strategic Planning Group.
