Iran: Airstrikes on militant positions to continue as long as 'necessary,' says Putin

President Vladimir Putin vowed on Monday that Russia will continue airstrikes in Syria from the Caspian Sea as long as he thinks "it is necessary, in order to punish the guilty," in a meeting on the sidelines of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Tehran. Putin made the remarks during the one-on-one meeting with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow.

The Russian leader said he was sensitive to concerns that "some inconvenience is created" for Turkmenistan and neighbour Kazakhstan due to the use of airspace over the Caspian Sea by the Russian Air Force. However, Putin was quick to point out that "all the efforts made by the Russian Federation to combat terrorism are first of all Russia’s burden."

He added out that "terrorist groups, such as the so-called Islamic State, Jabhat Al-Nusra and others" were targeted as they "spare no one, they are engaged in atrocities."
