Belgium: Brussels' Grand Place on lockdown amidst fears of terror attack

Belgium, Brussels
November 22, 2015 at 21:25 GMT +00:00 · Published

The surroundings of the Grand Place and the Radisson Blue Hotel in central Brussels were locked down by Belgian security forces, Sunday, as the city remains on high alert following a government warning of a possible terror attack.

Security forces used buses to block the streets preventing traffic from entering the area. They also performed searches on every car attempting to enter the city's central square. Armoured Personal Carriers (APCs) were deployed at the Grand Place as a reinforcement, with police officers patrolling the vicinities.

Mayor of the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek Bernard Clerfayt told Belgian RTBF radio that two suspects are in Brussels and "could commit dangerous acts," it was reported on Sunday. Brussels police have been searching for the key suspect in last week's Paris attacks Salah Abdeslam for over a week now. It is unclear which other suspect Clerfayt was referring to in his statement. Abdeslam, who lived in the Brussels district of Molenbeek, is alleged to have been involved in last Friday's attacks before returning to Brussels, reportedly in the hope of leaving for Syria.

Residents of the Belgian capital have been advised to avoid areas of potential crowding due to a "serious and imminent threat," according to a statement released by the Crisis Centre of the Belgian Interior Ministry on Saturday. Locals have also been advised to avoid sporting events and concerts in the Belgian capital.

The alert comes over one week after the tragedy in Paris, which left 130 people dead and just over 349 injured.
