Russia: Lion and tiger cubs face hypothermia as Crimea power cut continues
A number of animals at the Taigan Safari Park, near Simferopol, were at risk of catching hypothermia, Sunday, following the 'blowing up' of four transmission towers in the Ukrainian region of Kherson which led to a blackout across the Crimean Peninsula.
The director of the Taigan Safari Park, Oleg Zubkov, said that the "losses [of animals] will begin in a few days, if something does not happen, if we cannot switch on generators and provide tropical animals with warmth." Lion and tiger cubs, as well as crocodiles and tropical fishes are all at risk, if power is not restored to the park.
The four main transmission lines in Ukraine's Kherson region were cut off between Friday and Saturday in an apparent act of sabotage. It is unclear at this stage who was responsible for the incident. Photographs emerged on social media showing the damaged transmission towers. One photograph shows a Crimean-Tatar flag wrapped around the foot of a destroyed tower. The photographs follow reports of explosions in Chaplinka in the Kherson region, where power transmission towers supporting the lines delivering energy to Crimea are located.
Following the destruction of two transmission towers on Friday, hundreds of Ukrainians, including Right Sector supporters, gathered outside the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kiev to demand a full power blockade of Crimea.
