Russia: Blocking IS' financing key to defeating 'monster' of 'terrorism' - Matviyenko
Russia's Federation Council and State Duma held a first joint session on the fight against terrorism in Moscow, Friday. Both chambers of Russian Parliament expressed readiness for cooperation and called parliamentarians from other countries worldwide to set up an international anti-terrorist coalition to fight against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) and other terrorist organisations.
Chairperson of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko stressed the necessity of cutting off the funding resources of militants including the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL). "One of the key issues is to block the financial channels of the terrorist organisations. We know that ISIL is financed from over 40 countries including private individuals and business structures, financial organisations," she stated.
Earlier in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for the formation of a broad anti-terrorist coalition to combat the Islamic State while addressing to the United Nations General Assembly. This was taken further on Thursday by Chairman of the Russian State Duma's International Affairs Committee Alexei Pushkov, who called for an international anti-terror coalition to be formed in order to combat militant groups such as IS in light of the Paris terror attacks, comparing the proposed counter-terrorist coalition with the anti-Hitler alliance that formed in WWII.
