Russia: Raskhodnikov's 'The Martian' plagiarism case thrown out by court
Russian screenwriter Mikhail Raskhodnikov's plagiarism case was rejected by a Moscow court, Thursday, on the basis that Judge German Bugynin ruled that 20th Century Fox's Hollywood blockbuster The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott, was based on the book by Andy Weir.
With Khamovniki District Court dismissing the case, Raskhodnikov's lawyer, Shota Gorgadze confirmed that an appeal will be filed.
Raskhodnikov maintains that Andy Weir's book, the basis for the Hollywood film which was published in 2011, is near-identical to the plot of a Russian film that he was involving in making four years earlier. The Russian screenwriter alleges that in 2010 he presented his full screenplay along with visual materials to Fox executives in Russia.
Raskhodnikov was seeking 50 million rubles (around €720,000) in damages.
