Germany: Hanover security eases after bomb-scare cancels Netherlands match
Security measures around Hanover Stadium were loosened on Wednesday morning, a day after a bomb threat led to the cancellation of the friendly-match between the national team of Germany and the Netherlands on Tuesday evening. Police also closed Hanover's central station on Tuesday night and detonated a suspicious object. However, authorities confirmed it contained no explosives.
Police cordons were still visible in the area, after authorities contained the site after "solid intelligence" that an explosion was intended to be detonated at the stadium by a purported "Iraqi sleeper cell." Candles left in memorial of the 129 victims of the Paris terror attacks also filled the area.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere did not give further details about the nature of the concrete threat at the soccer stadium and asked for "trust," with the intelligence reportedly coming from French sources.
